Perpetual licence or subscription – which one suits your Mac

You buy a perpetual licence once and use it for good. A subscription (Microsoft 365) is paid continuously, monthly or yearly, and once the payments stop, editing stops too.

Anyone who uses Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook and doesn't need the next version every year is usually better off with the one-time purchase.

Office 2024 Standard: scope and editions

Office 2024 Standard for Mac includes the four core programs as full versions:

• Word – text and documents
• Excel – spreadsheets and calculations
• PowerPoint – presentations
• Outlook – email, calendar and contacts

You receive your licence key and the Microsoft-signed original setup file from our download library. You can continue to open and edit your existing .docx, .xlsx and .pptx files in Office 2024 exactly as before.

System requirements: it runs on your Mac

Office 2024 Standard runs natively on Apple Silicon (M1 to M4) and on Intel Macs. Both platforms are supported by the same download.

After the download, you install Office locally on your Mac. A permanent cloud sign-in is not required to use it.

How long does a perpetual licence last

A perpetual licence has no expiry date – the right to use it remains. The programs keep starting and working with no recurring payment.

You receive security updates within the support period that Microsoft has set for Office 2024. This does not include a permanent entitlement to every future feature or version – but the installed version stays usable with no follow-up costs.

Switching from Office 2019 or 2021 (read-only from 13 July 2026)

On 13 July 2026, the code-signing certificate for Office 2019 for Mac expires, and Microsoft is not renewing it. Office 2019 already left mainstream support on 10 October 2023.

The result: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook switch to a read-only mode. The apps still start, and you can open, view and print documents – but no longer edit or save them.

An Office 2021 for Mac that has not been updated is affected too. An updated 2021 version (16.83 or newer) is not affected for the time being.

With the Office 2024 perpetual licence, you keep full editing. Your existing files stay compatible and can be edited as normal – a good reason to switch before the deadline, without having to move to a subscription.
