Checking a Windows licence: verifying status and authenticity

Want to know whether your Windows licence is genuine and correctly activated? Windows shows this in Settings, and there is a simple command for the details. Here we show both methods and explain what the displays mean.

Checking the activation status

  • Open Settings. Open Settings via the Start menu.
  • System, then Activation. In the System section, select the Activation item.
  • Read the status. If it says Windows is activated, the licence is correctly applied.
  • Details via command. For more details: open Command Prompt as an administrator and enter slmgr /xpr. This shows whether the activation is permanent.

What the display means

Windows is activated means that Microsoft's servers have accepted the licence. The command slmgr /dlv shows additional details such as the licence type and the partial key. A genuine licence is listed there as correctly licensed.

If a warning appears such as Windows is not activated or an error code, the licence has not yet been applied or there was a problem. Common causes are a hardware change or an aborted activation. Our support helps free of charge in clarifying the matter.

Wie sehe ich, ob Windows aktiviert ist?

Über Einstellungen, System, Aktivierung. Steht dort Windows ist aktiviert, ist die Lizenz korrekt eingebunden. Der Befehl slmgr /xpr zeigt zusätzlich, ob die Aktivierung dauerhaft ist.

Wie prüfe ich, ob mein Windows-Key original ist?

Vorab lässt sich ein Key nicht zuverlässig prüfen, Microsoft bietet keine öffentliche Datenbank. Der verbindliche Test ist die Aktivierung selbst. Akzeptiert Microsofts Server den Key, ist er gültig.

Was bedeutet ein Aktivierungsfehler?
