What makes a licence audit-proof
Audit-proof does not mean that a licence is technically different. It is the same original Microsoft key. Audit-proof refers to the documentation: in the event of an audit, can it be proven that the licence was acquired lawfully.
Three things are part of this. First, a proper proof of purchase, meaning an invoice with VAT shown separately. Second, lawful origin: the licence must have first been placed on the market within the EU or Switzerland. Third, if required, sourcing documentation that makes the licence's path traceable.
How to recognise an audit-proof provider
- VAT invoice as standard. A provider that does not supply a proper invoice is not audit-suitable.
- A genuine, verifiable company. Reputable providers have a public commercial register entry and a valid VAT ID number, both verifiable in minutes. Bargain-basement providers often hide behind a shell company or none at all. Check the retailer yourself below.
- Sourcing documentation on request. A reputable provider can supply the deeper documentation in the event of an audit.
- Reachable support. In the event of an audit, you need a point of contact, not an anonymous shop.
