Mac Office 2021 vs 2024 essentially comes down to one question: an older or current version of the same idea – a one-time purchase with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, without a subscription. An updated version of Office 2021 (16.83 or newer) is safe for now. An un-updated 2021 installation hangs on the same certificate as Office 2019.

The 2024 feature level specifically means the current state of the four programs: a reworked ribbon, newer features in Excel and PowerPoint, plus adjustments to current macOS versions. In everyday use you work similarly in both generations; 2024 mainly brings the newer building blocks and ongoing maintenance within the current support period.

Read-only from 13 July 2026 – who it affects

On 13 July 2026 a code-signing certificate expires that Microsoft will not renew. Affected Office versions then switch to read-only mode.

Read-only means: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook still launch and open your documents, you can view and print them – but no longer edit or save them.

Does it run on your Mac? A quick word on requirements

Office 2024 for Mac runs on current macOS versions and supports Apple Silicon (M chips) as well as Intel Macs. Before buying, check that your macOS is current enough – the supported versions follow the Microsoft lifecycle.

Office 2021 also runs on somewhat older macOS generations. For newer Macs and upcoming macOS updates, 2024 is the more fitting choice.

Which version for whom?

If you're buying new now, Office 2024 for Mac usually makes more sense: a current feature level, current macOS support and no read-only concern around the cut-off date.

• Office 2024 fits if you're buying new, use a newer Mac, or want to keep working without the read-only risk.
• Office 2021 can be enough if you already run it in an updated state and don't need a version change.

Anyone who uses Outlook for mail and calendar, or wants to run Office locally entirely without a Microsoft account and without a subscription, is also well served by the one-time purchase – both versions include Outlook, and you stay independent of monthly costs. For a standalone Office installation on a single Mac, 2024 is the more carefree basis here.

Your existing .docx, .xlsx and .pptx files stay compatible in both versions. In Office 2024 you open and edit them as usual – the switch usually takes only a few minutes: install via download, open files, keep working.
